Is Health Care the Perfect Business Model (or does it need Healing)

I’ve been working on a business model for a new initiative for some time now, and as part of the process I have looked at other business models that are already in place. As I was reviewing the health care model, the idea came to me that it may be almost perfect. I look at a few aspects of this model below, then pause to ask another question or two. I hope this is a very light read, but I also hope it gets you to pause and think about some of the…

You Already Have Your Own Permission

I recently spoke with a colleague in Guernsey. I was connected to him through Dr. Lissa Rankin after hearing that he has initiated a project “to make Guernsey the best place to live on earth by 2020”.

I have written several blogs, Facebook posts, and tweets on twitter sharing my “big audacious dream” to make our community the “World’s Healthiest Community”. I originally wrote about this on January 25, 2013 and it has been in my head ever since. I also recently wrote…

Creating Healthy Communities

I am truly tired of #BigMoney

I was at a local screening of the movie "Vanishing of the Bees" last night, and two weeks ago saw a screening of the movie "Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of Our Lives".

The message that is incredibly clear to me is that, because very (make that VERY) large companies are focused on bottom line and shareholder value, there is little or no thought to the consequences of their actions.…

Stepping Into and Owning Your Power

Over the past few days I've been inundated with the word "power" and messages to "accept your power". Call it synchronicity or call it whatever you like, I am taking notice. I don't see this "power" as the negative struggle for power, or a need for power, or something to hold over others. Rather, I see this as the "power within", something we all have, and something that we seem to shy away from.

I have often been both intrigued and inspired by…

Empowering Patients | Healing Health Care

The current approach to dis-ease management is at best “incomplete” and at worst “flawed”.

As part of a diagnosis a patient hears things like “there’s no known cure”, “we don’t know what causes this”, and “you’ll have this for the rest of your life”. The patient is then offered a prescription for a drug cocktail to help mask the symptoms to improve their quality of life.

Yet we’re ignoring the…

Valentine’s Day – A Day of Unconditional Love

It’s Valentine’s Day, and most of you have probably already wished your sweetheart blessings of love. Maybe there are a few people in your life that you consider to be your Valentine, send love to all of them.

What would it look like if we treated Valentine’s Day as a day of Unconditional Love?

Maybe it would be the day that you performed your first random act of kindness. Or if you’ve done this type of good deed before, you perform two, or…

Can Empowered Patients Heal Healthcare?

In last week’s blog, I shared my thoughts on what constitutes an empowered patient, then asked the following questions. So are you an empowered patient? Do you see how empowered patients (and health care practitioners that encourage their patients to become empowered) will heal the healthcare system?

At the risk of screaming too loudly, here is my overriding thought. The empowered patient is the ONLY thing that will heal the healthcare system. And, more…

Are You An Empowered Patient?

Are you an empowered patient?

I consider myself one and have even made bold claims that teaching people to be empowered patients will solve the majority of problems associated with our current health care systems. Yet every once in a while I find myself considering what the traits of an empowered patient are.

It seems like many people who begin to have symptoms will go to their doctor to explain what they're experiencing. They'll describe the symptoms as best they can,…

Starting a Wave to Heal Healthcare

I’ve been talking a lot lately about a major passion of mine, that being “healing the healthcare system”. Whenever I get into a discussion with someone, I feel my own passion, I feel my energy rising. It’s a feeling of “life purpose”, and if you’ve ever had that feeling, you’ll know exactly what I mean. Almost surely the most common feedback I get during a discussion is along the lines of “love what you’re doing, love your message, keep it up, it will take time.” Lately I’ve started to…

A Callout to Super Heroes | Psst, you might be on this list

I was standing in the shower this morning and a random thought went through my mind that I should write a story that did a callout to superheroes. A few names started going through my mind as to who I would mention, so I let the thoughts flow and came up with a list of names. And here’s a spoiler alert – You, yes YOU, just might be on this list.

Wikipedia describes it this way: “A superhero (sometimes rendered super-hero or super hero) is a type of stock…

Are You a Health Care Evolutionary?

What do you call yourself? If someone asked you that question, how would you answer it?

Some of you might say that you're a doctor, a lawyer or a priest (that sounds like the start of a joke, doesn't it?). Others might say you're a housewife, a factory worker, or an engineer. I remember hearing a friend of mine answer that question in a round circle setting and she said something like "what I do is I'm a consultant, but who I am is something different." That gave me pause for…

What’s the Root Cause?

I’ve found myself asking this question a lot lately. Do you ever stop and ask yourself this question? And if you don’t, then WHY NOT? Oops, sorry about yelling there.

I have had a lot of discussions over the past few weeks with people that are experiencing a variety of symptoms. Whenever they start to describe their situation, I find myself dying to jump in with the question “what do you think the root cause is?”, and often I do. Some people respond with potential…

Are You A Lemming?

A crazy thought came into my mind this week about the similarities between lemmings and people. Do you remember the lemming story from when you were growing up? My first thought was to go to Wikipedia and look it up, then I realized that it would be better to go from memory. In early grade school, I was taught that for some reason, lemmings all gather together at some point and run off the edge of a cliff to their deaths. I don’t remember if there was an explanation as to why, I just…
