It's Time for the Gathering of Our Tribe: A Call to Action

When I started, I had no idea what would become of it. Empowered patient Ken Jaques volunteered to be the community manager, and even though I never announced it in any obvious way, people kept showing up. Something was happening, something I couldn’t quite explain. Ken kept asking me, “When are we going to have a call to action? When will we be asking people to DO something?” I didn’t know when that would happen, and I didn’t know what the call to action would be. I kept telling Ken, “We will know when it’s time.” Well, that was three years ago, and Ken and I both agree—it’s time.

As I write this, over 4200 of you have raised your hands and joined this community. I consider it The Gathering of the Tribe. (You’ll understand what I mean when I say that if you listen to me narrate Charles Eisenstein’s story The Gathering of the Tribe here.) While the deeper metaphysics of what it means for a tribe to gather may get esoteric, the outcome is obvious. When the time is right, those who are called to reform an outdated system find one another, both virtually and locally. When we are together in the same field of potentiality, change becomes inevitable.

The time is now. Are you ready to step up and take your place in the revolution to bring the care back to health care?

The Heal Health Care Karass

As I wrote in my book The Anatomy of a Calling, those of us who are in the Heal Health Care “karass” have been gathering like a swelling tide. What is a karass? Here’s an excerpt from my book:

In Cat’s Cradle, Kurt Vonnegut writes about how God organizes the world into units called a “karass.” A karass is a group of incarnated beings whose job it is to bring into existence one of God’s holy ideas. Members of a karass all further the collective purpose seamlessly, though many never even know they are part of this karass. Even if they never meet, they work together in harmony, in impeccable service to God’s holy idea. Everything about their lives furthers the purpose perfectly, even though they may be furthering the purpose unconsciously. When you meet someone who is a member of your karass, even though it may make no sense to you on a human level, you will recognize them as a family member instantly. Your souls will resonate, even if you appear to have nothing in common on the human level. This is how the Divine gets important things done in the world. Your karass is like a peaceful army that activates to bring light into the world.

Whether you’re a conscious health care provider of any sort, a medical educator, an empowered patient, a caregiver of an empowered patient, or a conscious, concerned activist representing the pharmaceutical industry, the managed care insurance industry, health care policy, a hospital administrator, or health care litigation, if you’re a member of Heal Health Care Now, I assume you are part of the Heal Health Care karass. If so, we have exciting news.

A Call to Action

October 14–16, 2016 in San Diego, California, Lissa Rankin and the Whole Health Medicine Institute will be hosting the first annual Whole Health Summit, a gathering of our tribe, in person and local. This will not be a summit that asks you to sit passively in your seat while you are inspired by motivational speakers but go home with no intention to actually do something. Instead, this is a call to action. We invite you to bring your voice, your vision, your expertise, your imagination, your activism, your intuition, and your life force to this groundbreaking gathering of the tribe so we can co-create the future of medicine together, one empowered healer-patient relationship at a time.

The Whole Health Summit will include inspiring talks by Lissa Rankin and author, speaker, activist, futurist, and philosopher Charles Eisenstein, as well as presentations and case studies from a variety of Whole Health Medicine Institute graduates, including Heal Health Care Now community leader Ken Jaques. [If you are interested in participating in this year’s Whole Health Medicine Institute, we’re enrolling now for the 2016 class. Learn more here.] The Whole Health Summit will also bring us together via round table discussions, a facilitated group process that will give everyone an opportunity to voice his or her own vision for the future of medicine, and music, movement and dance options.

Healing A Sick System

Krishnamurti said, "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society." In response, Whole Health Summit speaker Charles Eisenstein writes:

“If we are to take Krishnamurti at his word, then this epidemic calls for therapies that are social, economic, and political, and not just physical or even mental. In other words, there is a political dimension to the epidemic of [illnesses.] They alert us to a society that is indeed ‘profoundly sick.’ I believe that we can take Krishnamurti's aphorism a step further. To be well in a profoundly sick society, one must contribute to the healing of that society.”

That is our invitation. Will we feel victimized and complain about a health care system that threatens our health, our dignity, our integrity, and our callings as healers? Or will we rise up to contribute to the healing of that which threatens to disempower us?

I believe that healing health care will require a grass roots effort. We can’t fix it at the level of policy alone. We heal health care one healer-patient relationship at a time. How do we do that? Let’s gather the tribe and envision a new future.

It starts with YOU. As Margaret Mead famously said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” It takes a village. As Malcolm X said, “When ‘I’ is replaced with ‘WE,' even I-llness becomes WE-llness”.

Lissa and Ken

Thank you SOOO much for joining the revolution to put the "care" back in health care by becoming a community member here at!  When we first posted this site, our intention was to give everyone who wants to be part of the solution a chance to get involved. But the community is blissfully snowballing into something much bigger, so we wanted to give you a heads up.

We are planning big things for this site, which will include:

  • A whole new Wordpress website in addition to a community forum
  • Blogs that correspond with each stone of the Whole Health Cairn (Relationships, Work/Life Purpose, Creativity, Spirituality, Sexuality, etc.)
  • Ways you can get involved on a grass roots level to influence how health care is delivered and received in your neck of the woods
  • A directory of health care providers and healers that embrace this enlightened form of health care so you can find the right support on your healing journey (or if you're a health care provider or healer, how clients can find you)
  • Guidance with how you can write The Prescription for yourself
  • Resources and products that will help you nurture every stone in your Whole Health Cairn
  • Forums for putting into practice the 6 Steps To Healing Yourself that are taught in Mind Over Medicine
  • Videos, articles, documentaries and other curated content that will help us collectively envision and bring into being a healed health care system
  • And more...

Lissa has been busy spreading her vision for how to heal health care at hospitals, performing art centers, and other gatherings around the country as part of her book tour for her New York Times bestselling book Mind Over Medicine. She also filmed Heal Yourself: Mind Over Medicine, a 90-minute public television special that aired on PBS stations nationwide in September 2013.

We were initially planning to throw a launch party, but because wants to be something even bigger than we originally envisioned, we're delaying the official launch.  Right now we have just over 3,500 members, but by the time we launch and Lissa's public television special has aired live, we expect thousands more.

In the interim, feel free to take advantage of the resources we have now!

You can participate by:

  • Download Lissa's free ebook 12 Ways You Can Help Heal Health Care, which is available on the site
  • Watch Lissa's 3 TEDx talks and spread the word
  • Join the discussions on the forum and make your voice known
  • Check out the resources we've posted in the Resources section of the site
  • Order Lissa's book Mind Over Medicine, share it with your health care providers or clients or host a book club around the ideas presented in it

We hope you'll stick with us as we build the rest of this site, so stay tuned! Thank you again for your participation, your patience, and your commitment to being part of the solution.

With love and gratitude,

The team
